Welcome to Common Core Standards Applied. My name is Christopher Brewer and I am a principal in a small rural upstate New York middle/high school. I have been in education for 17 years. I have been a school administrator for the last 6 years. I am a certified social studies and reading teacher.
It is both an exciting and stressful time in the world of education. States are adopting the Common Core Standards and increasing the number of state assessments they are giving to students. They are also developing new measures by which teachers and principals will be evaluated. Change is inevitable. There are so many new initiatives that we are responsible for implementing that it feels like we have been placed in the middle of the forest without a topographical map or compass. It leaves us thinking, "How the heck do I navigate through it all?"
I set out to design this site to help my faculty as well as, other teachers and principals across the country to understand the key components of the Common Core Standards and how it applies to the current NY state standards, the APPR Process, and the Student Learning Objectives. I also hope this begins a dialogue and share information about the process that other teachers and administrators are using in their schools.
I would like to share some advice that I shared with my faculty at the beginning of the school year:
1) We are all in this together
2) The Common Core Standards are good standards for helping our students become college and
career ready.
3) Take a deep breath, relax, we will make it through.
Thank you for visiting the site, I plan to update the site on a regular basis including lesson ideas and other resources that are online to use to help us understand the changes that are taking place. Remember this is a journey and we are on the cusp of transforming the educational system in our country. I wish you and your students' success.
