After Reading Activities
After reading it is important to allow students to reflect on the text. Students need to be able to summarize what they have learned from the reading. Perhaps the most important part of this process is allowing students to share and verbalize what they have gained from their experience. Think about your own reading experiences. It is 7:30 in the teacher's lounge and you have just read an article in the paper. A colleague heard about the same story on the ride in. What conversation develops between you? How powerful is the learning? What excitement develops as a result of the conversation? Rarely is this technique used with students as they read and explore new text and it is one of the most powerful parts of the reading process. As you are aware students are social beings. They enjoy having conversations with their classmates. They enjoy debating their points and their understandings. Sometimes they want to have the last word. Imagine the enthusiasm students would have towards the content we want them to read if we allowed them they opportunity to engage socially with the text. We do it everyday in the working world , yet rarely in the classroom.
